Erich a career officer serving in the German Army from before the rise of Hitler, like many others he managed to elude persecution by serving in the military. The film opens with him desperately fighting on the Russian front, in spite of his battlefield heroism, following a battle he is arrested because his Jewish heritage was finally revealed. His Jewish wife ANNA, unbeknownst to him was already deported. He is sent to the Theresienstadt Ghetto in a torn uniform ironically still wearing his Iron Cross, Germany's highest award for bravery.
At the Ghetto, Erich is tormented by both the prisoners and the guards alike, all consider him a traitor. He feels betrayed and lost. However, he manages to reunite with Anna and befriend an older Jewish Forger HEINRICH and along with a few like minded prisoners they escape, bound for her parents and their son, ANTON.
En route, Erich and Anna are discovered by an old friend from her childhood, now a soldier, he attempts to arrest the two. Erich manages to kill him and reluctantly dons his uniform. They reunite with their son and her parents KONRAD AND HILDE in a small village very near the front line in the East.
Erich is soon discovered in uniform and sent back to the front meanwhile Anna’s father makes an attempt to obtain forged papers for all to escape to Switzerland. However a most ambitious and cruel SS Colonel GEPHARD, tasked with the hunting of escaped Jews, is alerted to their presence and now takes a personal interest in Anna. Erich cannot help them as he is again thrown into combat against a ruthless Russian Juggernaut, seeking the destruction of all things German or Jewish alike.
During a fierce battle Erich saves the lives of the soldiers in his company including a young German soldier, MICHAEL. Soon after, the company Colonel DIETERLE becomes aware of Erich’s real identity as a Jew and former officer. He does not subscribe to the regimes policies, and agrees to keep Erich’s secret. Erich and Michael desert, gathering Anna and her family intending to escape to Switzerland. However Gephard continues to round up Jews behind the front, capturing Erich, Anna and her family. Michael, along with the Colonel’s help, manage to pressure Gephard to allow Erich's family to go free but not before witnessing the murder of her parents. That night Erich and Michael burn their uniforms and they all head west. Soon they find themselves among Jewish partisans and HEINRICH hiding in the forests.
Gephard, has no intention of allowing any survivors who could bear witness to his atrocities, nor does he have any intention of dying for his country. So on a final desperate attack by the SS on the partisan camp, he seeks to terminate all. Gephard makes away with Anna in an attempt to pose as a civilian, hoping to be treated mercifully by the closing American ARMY. Michael, Anton and Erich close in, catching Gephard and Anna just as they are strafed by American planes.
